The reading from saint's Paul second letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 2:1-10) Timothy, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you have heard from me through many witnesses, commit these to faithful people who will be able to teach others also. You must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one serving in the army entangles himself with the affairs of this life, so that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. The hard-working farmer ought to have the first share of the crops. Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things. Remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer hardship as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--he then said to the paralytic, "Rise, take up your bed, and go home." And he arose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they marveled and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
